The Grace Music Institute provides children and adults the opportunity to develop musical ability and appreciation. Individual sessions led by competent musicians introduce the aspiring musician to the instrument of their choice. The intent of the Institute is to increase exposure to musical instruments, augment fun and enjoyment in the learning process and promote participation and involvement in music performance.

The Instructors are accomplished youthful musicians willing to teach children, teens and adults

Individual instruction is available to children and adults in the following areas:

  • Introduction to musical instruments
  • Beginner to Advanced-Level instruction 
  • Establishing good practice techniques and habits
  • Practice Sessions and Coaching for Recitals
  • Music Theory 

30 to 60 minutes sessions depending on experience. Advance Registration Required        Weekdays after School! Saturday Sessions too!

Current Instructors:
WILLIAM GU  - Musical Director, Piano/Cello Teacher
William Gu began his interaction with music through piano at the age of 4. He is the Grand Champion and Gold Award winner of the Youth Focus Young Artists competition, as well as a recipient of the Certificate of Merit Advanced Level.
William began his cello training at age 8, and made his solo debut at Ding Ding TV at age 10. William studies cello under Jonathan Koh, a faculty member of UC Berkeley and San Francisco Music Conservatory. William is also a member of the California Music Preparatory Academy; his piano trio won first place in the VOCE competition in San Francisco. In 2016, he was a selected winner in the Junior Bach Festival, and also first place winner at the San Jose Youth Symphony's Young Artist competition. He soloed with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra performing Haydn's Cello Concerto in C, and also with Philharmonic Orchestra performing Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme.  William also won second place in the American Protegé International Piano and Strings Competition, and was honored to solo at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York.  He is a founding member of the Grace Music Institute as well as the principal Cellist at his High School's orchestra and San Jose Youth Symphony Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2017, he was selected to represent his school in California All State string orchestra. He also a Gold medalist of the Presidential Service Award. William has taught piano and cello since 2014. Overall, he is a very nice, thoughtful, funny, and patient teacher towards his students.
RYAN SHENG - Piano Teacher 
 Ryan Sheng started to learn music at 4 and half. Since the age of 6, he has performed in many concerts and music competitions. In 2010 and 2012, he was invited  by San Jose State University  and International Russian Music Competition society to play concerts as a featured young musician. He has also played 5 piano and organ solo concerts with his older brother in the U. S. A, Austria, and Poland.
The major music competitions he has won prizes in include U.S. Open Music Competition, 2010 International Russian Music Competition in U.S., 3rd International Rosario Marciano Piano Competition in Vienna, Austria, and 2014 and 2016 International Schlern Music Competition in Schlern, Italy.  He was one of the 25 official contestants from all over the world of 2016 Gina Bachauer International piano Competition.
Ryan Sheng is a founding member of Evergreen Ensemble since 2010. The chamber group rehearse and perform regularly in local senior center, charity and celebration concerts. The Evergreen Ensemble has been acknowledged twice by the Junior Bach Festival as featured DVD artists in 2014 and 2015 and has also won 3rd prize in the U.S Open Music Competition’s Instrumental Ensemble category. In November of 2014, evergreen ensemble collaborated with Grace church to open Grace Church Music Institutions. Ryan Sheng started to teach piano voluntarily ever since.
STELLA HE - Piano Teacher
Stella has been playing piano for about nine to ten years now. Since she was six, she has competed in various music competitions and festivals and has won numerous awards, such as multiple top awards in the United States Open Music Competition, third place in the Marian Felice Youth Piano Competition, performed in the Bay Area Music Festivals, and more. Aside from that, she has taken music tests and recently passed the CM Test Advanced Level with Merit. Stella enjoys working with students of all ages. She looks forward to teaching students who are interested in piano!
SERENA ZHANG - Piano Teacher

Serena has been playing piano for about 9 to 10 years, and throughout this musical journey, she has gained in-depth knowledge of music theory and a talent at promoting creative expression. Her passion with music can be seen through her extensive collection of accolades and accomplishments. She has attended USOMC (United States Open Music Competitions) since 2012, winning numerous awards, including four first places, two of which she received in the January 2016 USOMC. She was also awarded first and second place at the 2015 USOMC in Oakland, CA. Besides the latter, She has also participated and gained awards in the San Jose International Piano Competition, Marian Filice Youth Competition, as well as the Bay Area Music Legacy Competition. However, most importantly, she is a certified instructor, as she has successfully passed both the Certificate of Merit Piano Theory Level 10 and the ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) Level 5 Theory Exams. She skill sets include an extensive performance background, comprehensive knowledge in harmony and music theory, and perfect pitch.

Serena's objective is to become a teacher or tutor for students who are engaged or interested in learning music, especially in the fields of piano and music theory. She has considerable experience collaborating with a diverse range of students and parents, and accepts all those who are willing or eager to learn. Overall, she is a patient, focused, friendly, and encouraging teacher.
